The Disney produced 1993 version of The Three Musketeers is a cinematic cousin to the 1991 Kevin Costner led Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Both feature American actors portraying the main characters in historic stories about French and English men. Each film is also adorned with a catchy soundtrack and chart-topping single from Bryan Adams and company. The Three Musketeers is the more light-hearted entertainment of the two pictures, but that doesn’t mean this re-telling of Alexander Dumas’ famous novel is solely for children. Adults and teens will also be captivated by the adventure, sword-play, and beautiful people on-screen.

An evil royal advisor (Tim Curry) has disbanded the Musketeers with out the young King’s permission. Now unemployed, three loyal swordsmen (Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt) are joined by an egar recruit (Chris O’ Donnell) to protect the King of France from a coup. Together, the foursome battle enormous odds, in their attempt to take down a morally corrupt Cardinal and a seductive spy (Rebecca De Mornay).

Director Stephen Herek does a great job finding an appropriate pace and tone for his film and infusing the proceedings with an ample amount of humor and 90’s irony. This is a movie that is able to tell it’s simple story with joy and excitement, unlike the ponderous and solemn atmosphere that hampers Robin Hood (1991). Despite being American born the four lead actors make splendid swashbucklers and each actor makes the character their own. The Three Musketeers is amongst the best of Disney’s live-action offerings for that 1990’s.

Director: Stephen Herek
